I can create leads and need to add the name and company but I can not select a person already in my database to simply become a lead. I can only create a new lead then if it becomes an opportunity I can attach it to an existing client or contact... 

I don't understand why I can not click on a contact and decide to turn it into a lead and later an opportunity

I probably miss something trivial but can't really figure it out
