Seems like the ideal solution, and honestly it is one of the annoyances of the pos to get rid of the print window in some easy way..
Maybe you should try this app: https://github.com/Fedrojesa/ProxyPoS
It's a custom made app for install on your cashier box and use the OpenERP proxy api and a local webserver to directly print your tickets to any ECS/PoS compatible printer device.

POS does already support thermal printers.
If you set up yours as "default printer", there is no print window that comes up.
