would it be workable for a newcomer to start on v6.1 instead of going for v7 still? There must be something like an end-of-life date for each version. When will this be coming for 6.1? Can you go beyond that?

We heard some advice to 'sit out' v7 and wait for things to be better in v8. Similar approach as many people took regarding Windows (by skiping Vista). Any ideas whether this is a workable plan?

I went direct to 7.0 for this project and so far haven't been disappointed. I haven't used 6 however.

7.0 is a LTS release and will be supported until version 9.0 is released, 6.1 was apparently only supported until May this year, this slide set here (specifically slide 27) may shed some light on the support policy, also check out the official release cycle docs here.

Sorry abut the lack of links, I don't have enough "karma"

Technically, what is stopping you from running OpenERP 6.1 forever ?

You have the source code?

... and there are partners available to support 6.1. Some even are still investing in developments targeted to v6.1.
