We map the parts list of a product completely over several levels in odoo
We can tag / mark spare parts or wear parts in the BOM items
In addition, there is information on whether it is a recommended spare part or an optional spare part and additionally, it may be that a valve actuator is critical in a pipeline A (Bom position), while it is not critical in another pipeline.
We confused with parts list versions, as there are always new barcodes and references ....

I've a client with similar needs but they refurbish their products. The main BOM is the original product that gets manufactured (with multiple levels and components), then they use a seperate BOM for the refurbished equivalent product (with a reference to it's parent).
Then on the refurbished BOM you only store the parts that commonly wear and need to be replaced but with ZERO default quantities.
Flow
1. Manually create an MO, choose the product and manually select refurbished BOM
2. Amend the list of items needed (remove unneeded components) and adjust the quantities
3. Complete mfg. process

Your solution is understandable. But our case is slightly different.
In the original BOM (with which we manufacture the product), items are marked as wear parts or spare parts.
From the complete scope of all wear parts, we create an offer for maintenance (with an additional service item).
If I now have two BOMs and the original BOM (PLM) is updated, then I have to maintain this manually in the spare part BOM. I would like to avoid this.
It is similar with the spare parts. I wanted to offer these to the customer as a complete BOM and he decides on the scope of the spare parts he wants to buy.
We want to call up the complex BOM of a product and get a list of all spare parts / a list of all wear parts.
