Hello,
for our shipping we need to calculate the amount of products per box.
That would need to be dependent on attributes of products (with box 50 items per carton / without box 200 items per carton).
According to that information, the shipping module would be able to figure out how many cartons are in one order.
Is this possible or does that sound like a custom module/add on?

I have play with this some months ago. I can't remember exactly, I hopes these are the right options :
in Inventory / Configuration / Settings :
under Traceability : Packages "Record packages used on packing: pallets, boxes, ..." : check it
under Products : Packaging Methods "Manage available packaging options per products" : check it
And I also defined UOM (Unit Of Measures) related to packages.
