By default Odoo grabs the period of the journal enty to generate the journal entry number.
Is there a functional way or module that uses the date field.
Say invoice has a date 6/1/2017 but costs where for 12/2016
We force the periode on 12/2016 but want the entry number to be EXJ/2017/00x
Did you check the possibilities of "Settings/Technical/Sequences & Identifiers"? If I remember it correctly, the sequence is not related to the accounting date.
