and if I try and save it gives an error in res.partner. What permission do I need to create companies then? I have various admin rights but I'm not an admin user.

Thanks Ermin - but no error messages. it was just permissions, and it looks like it was because although I had an admin, it was a user that previously had a company and partner set up, which led to some internal permissions issue - now resolved because my user is now a "pure" admin and not the mixup it once was ;)
